Naming Ceremonies

Naming Ceremonies

This is a heartfelt and meaningful way to welcome a child into your family and community. As an Independent Celebrant in Fife, Cupar, Dundee, Tayside, and Perthshire, I create ceremonies that are entirely shaped around your story — from the journey through pregnancy to the moment you first held your child, or the beautiful path that led you to adoption.

Planning your perfect Naming Ceremony Your naming ceremony should feel as unique as your child

  • Your family’s values and traditions.

  • Ways to involve siblings and special family members/friends.

  • A way of celebrating a joyous moment with pictures and video.

  • If adopting a child, this helps the child to know she/he has been accepted within the family circle.

  • Creating keepsakes from the day.

  • Promises and commitments made by parents, guide‑parents, grandparents, or siblings and friends, all celebrating together,

Whether you are welcoming a newborn or celebrating the arrival of an adopted child, a naming ceremony offers a warm, inclusive, and deeply personal way to show how loved and cherished they are. It creates a moment in time where family and friends gather to honour your child’s place in the world — and the community that will support them as they grow.

Beautiful Ritual Ideas for your Naming Ceremony.

  • Family Handfasting - This ancient tradition takes on new meaning in naming ceremonies. Select ribbons that represent your hopes for your child’s future -blue for wisdom and tranquility, red for love, and green for growth. As family members help bind the ribbons, they weave together their promises of support and love.

  • Circle of support - Invite guests to form a circle around parents and child, creating a physical representation of your community’s love. Each person holds a candle and takes turns sharing a hope, blessings or promise of support. As each person speaks, they light their candle from their neighbours flame until the circle glows completely -  a power symbol for the continuous chain of love surrounding your child. This ritual works beautifully combined with the Light of Love ceremony, especially at sunset when the candlelight creates a magical atmosphere.

  • Memory Quilts - Stitch together stories and wishes into a cosy keepsake. Family members can contribute squares made from meaningful fabrics - perhaps a patch from grandma’s wedding dress or mum’s christening gown. This tangible expression of love will wrap your child in family memories for years to come.

  • Unity Paint - Fingerprint Art - Turn your ceremony into a collaborative masterpiece by creating art together. Fingerprints form a family tree, colours mix to represent joining families, or abstract shapes capture the day’s emotions. The finished piece becomes both artwork and artefact, telling the story of your celebration in colour and form.

  • Blessing Stones - Natures own art becomes a vessel for love as guests write blessings / decorate smooth stones. These can form a garden border, fill a special bowl, or create a path in your garden. Each stone carries the weight of good wishes, becomes touchstones of connection to this special day.
